Your Creative Guide to Zurich

Zurich has a reputation for banking and precision, but spend some time here and you quickly realise it's also one of Europe's most quietly impressive creative cities. The design scene is rigorous, the gallery culture is serious, and the independent food and nightlife landscape is genuinely world-class. This guide covers the studios, spaces, and spots that matter for people working in the creative industries.

Zurich is a city that doesn't oversell itself, which is part of what makes it so interesting to discover. The Swiss design tradition runs deep here, and you feel it in everything from the typography on the tram network to the layout of the shops in Langstrasse. It's an expensive city, no point pretending otherwise, but the quality of what you get for that is consistently high, and the creative community is tight-knit, international, and doing genuinely interesting work.

Creative Neighbourhoods in

Zurich

Discover the city’s most creative districts, from vibrant cultural quarters to emerging areas where artists, designers and makers shape the local scene.

Langstrasse

Langstrasse is Zurich's most diverse and unpretentious street, running through Kreis 4 with a mix of independent restaurants, late-night bars, vintage shops, and the occasional gallery. It's where Zurich feels more like a real city — less polished than the lakeside, more interesting because of it.

Zürich-West

Zürich-West is the city's most creative district, a former industrial zone west of the main station that's been transformed by artists, designers, and entrepreneurs without losing its gritty edge. The Gerolds-Areal, Im Viadukt market, Freitag's shipping container flagship, and Frau Gerolds garden all sit within a short walk of each other in what's become Zurich's answer to a proper creative quarter.

Altstadt

Zurich's Altstadt straddles the Limmat and packs in a lot: the birthplace of Dada at Cabaret Voltaire, a cluster of galleries and design shops on Münstergasse and Niederdorfstrasse, and one of the best-preserved medieval streetscapes in Switzerland. Start here, then cross the river.

Westhive

Westhive is one of Zurich's more design-conscious coworking spaces, with locations in Zürich-West and Basel. The Zurich space has a community feel that goes beyond a basic hot desk setup, with a good mix of startups, freelancers, and small creative studios.

Cafés, Bars & Restaurants in

Zurich

popular with Creatives

Explore the cafés, bars and restaurants loved by creatives for meeting, working, socializing or simply finding inspiration over great food and drinks.

Café Sprüngli

Café Sprüngli at Paradeplatz is a Zurich institution — a confectionery and cafe on this spot since 1859. The Luxemburgerli macarons are the thing to get, but the cafe itself is a proper old-school European patisserie worth sitting in for a coffee when you're in the Altstadt.

DRAFT Coffee

DRAFT Coffee on Wildbachstrasse is a contemporary specialty coffee shop with a beautifully designed interior and a brunch menu that goes beyond the standard. One of the more considered coffee destinations in the city, popular with the design crowd in Seefeld.

Neue Taverne

Neue Taverne on Glockengasse is a plant-based bistro that takes vegetables seriously — creative, seasonal dishes in a well-designed room. It doesn't announce itself as a vegan restaurant, it just happens to be one, and it's better for it.

Frau Gerolds Garten

Frau Gerolds Garten in the Gerolds-Areal is a modular urban garden bar and restaurant right next to the Freitag flagship. A relaxed outdoor spot with small shops, changing food menus, and a sun-drenched terrace that fills up with the Zürich-West creative crowd when the weather cooperates.

Hiltl

Hiltl on Sihlstrasse has been serving vegetarian food since 1898, making it the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world. The buffet is excellent, the central location is convenient, and it draws a wide, creative crowd. It's earned its reputation many times over.

Galleries, Art Spaces & Museums in

Zurich

A curated selection of galleries, museums and contemporary art spaces that showcase the city’s cultural pulse and creative expression.

Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst

Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst is a contemporary art museum inside the Löwenbräu Areal, a converted former brewery now housing several galleries and art spaces. One of the strongest contemporary art programmes in Switzerland, with a focus on emerging and mid-career international artists.

Cabaret Voltaire

Cabaret Voltaire in the Altstadt is where Dada was born in 1916, and it still runs as a cultural space with events, exhibitions, and a bar. A small but historically charged venue — the kind of place where the walls genuinely carry some weight.

Museum für Gestaltung

Museum für Gestaltung is one of Europe's leading design museums, part of the Zurich University of the Arts. The collection covers graphic design, product design, and visual communication, with a strong archive of Swiss poster art and a consistently sharp exhibition programme.

Kunsthaus Zürich

Kunsthaus Zürich is the largest art museum in Switzerland, with a collection spanning the Middle Ages to today and a significant extension by David Chipperfield completed in 2021. The Giacometti hall, the Munch collection, and the rotating contemporary programme make it one of the best reasons to visit Zurich.

Zurich

Browse design stores, bookshops and concept shops offering everything from art books to local design objects and creative inspiration.

Im Viadukt

Im Viadukt is a covered market and shopping destination built into the arches of a century-old railway viaduct in Zürich-West. Local designers, food producers, a weekly farmers market, and some of the city's more interesting independent shops — all in one walkable stretch underneath the tracks.

Freitag Flagship Store

Freitag's flagship in the Gerolds-Areal is a Zurich landmark — a tower of stacked recycled freight containers housing the full collection of bags made from repurposed truck tarpaulins. Climb to the top for one of the best views over Zürich-West. As much an experience as a shop.

25hours Hotel Zürich West

25hours Hotel Zürich West is the most design-forward hotel option in the city, located in the heart of the creative district near the Viadukt. The interiors draw on the neighbourhood's industrial history and the rooftop has good views over the area. A reliable choice that feels genuinely connected to where it is.

The CLC is great because I can easily get to know previously unknown creative people in the city, gain new inspiration, expand my talent network and also discover new corners and restaurants in the city. I think CLC members are curious and open-minded people by nature. It's always exciting to learn more about the city's creative scene and its projects. At my previous meetings, we always had interesting discussions and the time for lunch was often far too short. I'm already looking forward to my next CLC.

Markus Wohlhüter
Graphic Designer, Zürich

When I joined Creative Lunch Club, I didn’t expect to connect with people who live in the same neighbourhood as me. It’s pretty cool to build a community of creatives in your vicinity, especially because it’s easier to nurture those connections when you live in a big city. I love it.
